Sonnet Videos

I'd like all of my Shakespeare students to watch this 20 minute mini-lecture about the history and form of the English sonnet, and, in the video that follows, to watch and listen to Shakespeare's sonnet 130 as read by Alan Rickman (and illustrated with kinetic typography). I look forward to reading each student's comments and/or blog posts about Shakespeare's sonnets.

It’s nice to learn a bit more about sonnets in general and to see that there were others before Shakespeare who had some good stuff. You know how in writing classes they always tell you to enter into a literary conversation and contribute something? I kind of like thinking that that’s what Shakespeare did. Maybe it’s a silly thought but sort of fun to think about. I also like seeing what sorts of sonnets may have motivated Shakespeare to write sonnet 130. Also, here’s a link to a vlog I did focusing on one of the sonnets. It involves the Motley Crue so if that doesn't spark your interest I don't know what will. http://stevensmallory382.blogspot.com/2012/01/mot...
Thank you for more information on the sonnets. It is very interesting, and there is alot more to the sonnets than one probably would typically think. We also see to like to attribute thing to the person we are most familiar with, so of course it makes sense that Shakespeare was not the first.

I love your sonnet 130 video. What's not better than Snape and Shakespeare.
